Tips for Success on BA1!

1. For most of the assignments you write in this class, you will not be allowed to write in first-person voice. HOWEVER, since this assignment requires that you write about your own personal experiences, you are encouraged to write in first-person voice. It’s ok to say “I” and “me”!

2. Your essay should not simply offer a list of answers to the questions (although you are definitely required to answer ALL OF THE QUESTIONS in your assignment prompt). Instead, reorganize or recombine the questions as your essay requires.

3. Your target length for this essay is 150-300 words. If your essay is a little longer than 300 words, that’s great. However, if your essay is shorter than 150 words, beware! You have probably not adequately answered all of the assignment prompts, and that will be reflected in your grade.

4. Be detailed and specific. This will make your essay more interesting and vivid to your readers. For example, don’t just say that you wrote about 5 papers in high school, and that they were mostly research-based. Elaborate on that general statement with a specific example. Do you remember a particular paper that you wrote? What was the paper about? Did you have to cite your sources using APA or MLA citation style?

5. Compose your essay in Microsoft Word so that you can take advantage of the program’s built-in spelling and grammar check feature. This can help you catch obvious mistakes before you turn in the assignment!
